again on that core_settings table the param_name URL param_value is blank should this be the main url of the site?

Great news: I have successfully recovered my site. I had a development copy on a different laptop which I used to run as an offline version and with the fantastic support and guidance received by CisterNino and Jasmines for which I am eternally greatful compared the param_values of all entries in the core_setting table. Many field were blanks or not standard values such as the currency name, ttl, URL, hteditor etc. All reset to the same values or equivalent on my offline copy successfully allowed me to log in and test the site.

Once again I am extremely thankful for the help and advice received from community members.
