I see there is the possibility to add additional fields in the configuration section, but I don't know how to add these additional fields to forms of the system, like the user registration form. How are those additional fields supposed to be used (version 1.4.30).

Assign the fields to the org chart root node (or the node you need), be sure the fields are not hidden for users, then check again your registration form.
